We As One is proud to share that our founder, LeanneJennings, was recognised at the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson’s Civic Awards 2026.
The Civic Awards celebrate individuals and groups who go above and beyond to strengthen communities across the district. This year’s ceremony, held as part of the #CelebratingYOU campaign, recognised those who quietly and consistently make a difference in the lives of others — reminding us that meaningful change happens not in isolation, but within communities willing to stand together.
Leanne was acknowledged for the courage and resilience she has shown in transforming her experience of childhood sexual abuse into meaningful advocacy and action. Rather than allowing silence to define herstory, she has used her voice to help others find theirs — helping to shift conversations within our own community towards awareness, prevention and support.
As a founding voice of We As One, Leanne has helped build a survivor-led movement committed to breaking silence, challenging stigma and creating safe, supportive spaces for healing and prevention. Through her leadership, compassion and determination, she has supported survivors, educated communities and encouraged open, constructive conversations about abuse and protection.
This recognition reflects something bigger than one individual. It signals a growing collective commitment within our district to listen, to believe and to stand alongside survivors. Abuse impacts every community — and real change requires all of us. When communities choose to acknowledge harm, centre survivor voices and prioritise protection, that is how lasting change begins.
The nomination noted that Leanne embodies the spirit of the Human Endeavour Award — reflecting resilience, service and a deep commitment to protecting the next generation.
We are honoured to see this work recognised as part of #CelebratingYOU and proud to be part of a community choosing to stand together in support of survivors.
This recognition belongs not only to Leanne, but to every survivor who has broken the silence — and to everyone committed to building safer communities for the future.
